What are some Hypoallergenic Dog Breeds?

Poodle in Colorful Photo

Tired of the itchy, watery eyes and the constant sneezing that happens every time you pet a dog? Have you given up on the dream of having a cuddly pooch to call your own?

Well throw away the tissues and start shopping for cute squeaky toys, ’cause you may just find a hypoallergenic dog breed on our list that will have you achoo-free and enjoying the “dog days” of your life.

Afghan Hound

This long, lean beauty with its flowing hair is sure to make even a supermodel jealous.

The Afghan Hound originated in (you guessed it) Afghanistan and was once used for hunting large prey in both the desert and mountain regions. Hence, the abundant flowing coat.

Although, this dog is considered one of the ancient breeds, it wasn’t imported into England until 1925. One year later the American Kennel Club recognized this magnificent canine as a true breed.

Why is the Afghan Hound considered a hypoallergenic dog?

The coat of the Afghan Hound is not only gorgeous, but it’s also more like human hair and does not possess an undercoat.

American Hairless Terrier

Bald IS beautiful and the American Hairless Terrier can prove it! This perky little canine derived from the Rat Terrier and will actually receive its full recognition by the American Kennel Club this year (2016).

It can weigh up to 25 pounds and its skin can range in colors from black, blue, pink, brown, tan and sable with almost solid colors, brindle, spotted or saddled (color over the back) patterns on its skin.

The American Hairless Terrier can also have a variety of eye colors like brown, blue, grey, amber or turquoise.

The lack of fur on this pooch is great for those folks who cannot tolerate the shedding of “normal” dog breeds.

Bichon Frise

With its white “powder-puff” coat and round dark eyes and nose, the Bichon Frise looks more like a stuffed toy than an actual canine.

This good-natured dog hails originally from the Mediterranean area and was brought to the US in 1956.

The Bichon Frise loves to be loved and wants to be the center of its family’s world. It has a lively and playful personality that is sure to bring joy into the homes of all who choose it.

Why is the Bichon Frise considered a hypoallergenic dog?

The double coat of this canine prevents its hair from falling out because it gets caught up in the thick soft fur.

Chinese Crested

Even though this unique canine tends to win more “Ugly Dog Contests” than other breed, beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder. However, what it may lack in looks is well made up for in its devoted and loving personality.

In fact, the Chinese Crested was actually bred to be a therapy dog for bedridden folks, as it will stay close to its pet parent, lying quietly by their side for hours on end.

Why is the Chinese Crested considered a hypoallergenic dog?

With only small tufts of hair on its head, feet and tail, people who suffer from allergies may do well with this breed. Plus, even the “fur” it does have is considered more like human hair.

There’s a lot of dog packed into the pint-sized body of the Maltese.

It not only excels in doggy sports (agility, obedience, rally and tracking), but it works well as a therapy dog and pet companion. Its long flowing white coat is gorgeous to behold and lovely to the touch.

Personality wise, you couldn’t ask for a more people-orientated, playful and trainable pooch.

Maltese with Bow in Hair

Why is the Maltese considered a hypoallergenic dog?

Since the Maltese lacks an undercoat and does not shed much, it is considered to be a better choice for those suffering from pet allergies.

With three sizes to choose from this curly-haired pooch has been winning the hearts of dog-lovers for decades. In fact, the Poodle is one of the oldest breeds, dating as far back as the first centuries B.C.

The Poodle is not only a beautiful dog, but it is intelligent, loving, loyal and even a bit mischievous. It loves to play and is always up for a good game so it can let loose and demonstrate its “goofy” side.

The tight curls and lack of shedding gives those with allergies a chance to own a wonderful dog.

This dog is so awesome, they did it over in three sizes!

The Schnauzer’s classic big eyebrows and bristly mustache gives it the appearance of a wise-old sage ready to give you a “fatherly” piece of advice…well, maybe not, but it sure is cute.

The Schnauzer was originally bred in Germany to get rid of vermin, herd livestock and to be a guard dog. It has an above-average intelligence, which can also make it a bit stubborn at times.

It loves to be the center of attention and for that pleasure it will reward you with being a loyal and always on the alert watch dog.

Why is the Schnauzer considered a hypoallergenic dog?

The wiry coat of the Schnauzer sheds very little and also does not emit a lot of “doggy odor.”

Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier

Versatility is the one word that best describes the Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier (Wheaten for short).

It is just as happy in the city as it is on a farm as long as it is getting enough love, attention and daily exercise.

This Terrier breed is happy-go-lucky by nature, gets along well with children and can be a great competitor in agility and flyball. But be aware, the one trait a Wheaten is known for is running full speed to greet you at the door…happy, happy, happy!

The hair on this canine is silky and soft with little to no shedding. However, it will need to be groomed daily to keep its coat from tangling into matts.

Spanish Water Dog

Who wouldn’t want a dog with a clownish personality and loves to have fun with everyone in the family?

The Spanish Water Dog enjoys being a part of the activities of the household and wants to interact with its humans. But don’t think that’s all this amazing pooch has to offer, it is also a brilliant and protective watchdog, taking care of all those he deems as “one of his own.”

This breed is also excellent at Search & Rescue, herding and hunting small game.

Why is the Spanish Water Dog considered a hypoallergenic dog?

The curly coat of this canine naturally forms in tight cords so it will not shed.

The Yorkie was voted the most popular toy breed in the United States, but that title hasn’t gone to its adorable little head. This precious pooch is an ideal pet for apartments and loves to be pampered. It has a spunky and charming personality, but can be protective of its favorite human.

Like most Terrier breeds, the Yorkshire can also be headstrong and should have early socialization to help it become a well-rounded pet
