How To Make Homemade Dog Treats? You’re Dog Will Thank You For These!

Homemade Heart Shaped Treats for Dogs

Making homemade dog treats can be a fun and healthy way to bond with your dog.

While there are hundreds of great recipes out there, I’m going to focus on just a few simple ones to get you started!

Doggy Jerky

One of the simplest treats you can make for your dog is jerky. All you need to make doggie jerky is a meat of your choice and a dehydrator. Some of my dogs favorites are buffalo, rabbit, duck, and venison.

Before you begin the dehydration process it is important you remove all the fat from the meat as the fat can become rancid and cause your jerky to spoil.

Once you remove the fats, cook the meat in the oven until it reaches 160 degrees Fahrenheit. This will kill any bacteria in the meat that could potentially make your canine companion sick.

Cut the meat into small strips, and spray the racks in your dehydrator with a nonstick spray.

Bonus Tip: If you want to make some of this scrumptious jerky for yourself now would be the time to add spices or a rub to make your jerky more flavorful. For your dogs, however, plain meat tastes just right!

Add your meat to the dehydrator being careful to leave enough space between the strips for the heat and air to get through.

Cook until there is no moisture left in the meat, but it is still slightly chewy.

Allow the meat to cool completely before removing from the dehydrator. You can then package your jerky in an airtight container or bag.

If stored in a cool dry place this doggie jerky can keep 6 months to a year. Don’t be afraid to buy in bulk with a shelf life like that!

Peanut Butter Pumpkin Cookies

To make this crowd pleasing cookie you will need:

  • 1 cup pumpkin puree
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup oats (optional if your dog is on a grain free diet, sub an extra 1/4 cup grain free flour)
  • 3 cups whole wheat flour, brown rice flour, or gluten free flour
  • 3 tablespoons of all natural peanut butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)

Once you have all your ingredients it’s time to start baking.

Preheat oven to 350°F.

  • In small bowl, stir together the flour, oats, and cinnamon.
  • In a separate large bowl, whisk together the eggs, pumpkin and peanut butter until combined.
  • Stir wet ingredients into dry.
  • Pour onto a floured surface and roll dough out to 1/2 thick. Cut out using cookie cutter.
  • The dough will be a little sticky, a dusting of flour for your hands and the rolling pin will help!
  • Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until golden brown.
  • Place on cooling racks and let cool thoroughly. They will harden as they cool.

Making homemade treats for your dog is a healthy, cost effective alternative to the preservative filled, mystery treats you will find in stores.

While this endeavor is one you may begin as a special treat for your dog it can become addictive, and it won’t be long before you stop feeding your dog processed foods completely.

An all natural diet of homemade food and treats can actually be very beneficial for your dog, especially if he is suffering from allergies. Just be sure to consult a canine nutritionist to be sure the diet is nutritionally complete!

While I do make homemade dog treats for my dogs, I can not take credit for the original recipes. You can find them and other recipes for yourself at My Baking Addiction.

I promise once you see your dog enjoying the jerky and these delectable baked goods you will never want to go back to store bought.

Bonus: Just in case you don’t have time, these dog bakeries are sure to fill your dog’s sweet tooth. And in case you’re worried about your pups teeth, have no fear, we have something for that, too.
